Pregnancy is one of the most crucial moments in a woman's life, and her diet plays an important role in the baby's well-being. It's a well-known fact that a mother's diet during pregnancy is very important to her baby's health. During pregnancy, the diet must be balanced and nutritious, and the food items to eat and avoid during pregnancy should be kept in mind.

Here are some food items that women should avoid during pregnancy

Raw and Undercooked Eggs

You should try not to consume raw and undercooked eggs because they may contain salmonella bacteria, which can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and in some cases even death.

Undercooked or Raw Meat

Avoid undercooked or raw meat, especially poultry, pork, and sausages. Make sure to eat only cooked meat, which is cooked thoroughly, and should not be pink, or have any blood coming out of it.

Alcohol

To ensure the highest safety for you and your baby, you should avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your unborn baby's mental development. However, you may eat certain dishes cooked with alcohol as the cooking process removes the alcohol.

Raw Fish

Raw fish, especially shellfish, can cause several infections. These can be viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections, such as norovirus, Vibrio, Salmonella, etc. Some of these infections may only affect you, causing dehydration and weakness. Other infections may even be passed on to your baby, leading to serious, or even fatal, consequences.

Processed and Junk Food

Consuming processed foods during pregnancy can increase your chances of excess weight gain, gestational diabetes, and pregnancy complications. This can even have long-term health implications for you and your child.

Caffeine

Limit your caffeine intake to under 200 mg per day, which is around 2 to 3 cups of coffee. High caffeine consumption during pregnancy may cause issues in the baby's growth and lead to low birth weight.

Pre-Prepared or Pre-Packaged Salads

Pre-prepared or pre-packaged fruit or vegetable salads, even those from buffets and salad bars, have an increased risk of listeria contamination and should not be consumed.

Energy Drinks

Women should also stay away from energy drinks during pregnancy as they may contain high levels of caffeine and other ingredients which are not recommended for pregnant women.

Sugary Snacks

Women should keep cakes, biscuits, cookies, chips, and candy to a minimum. Many of these options are high in sugar and fat, have little nutritional content, and undermine a pregnant woman's efforts to maintain healthy body weight.
