Skin Problems
Updated on 3 November 2023
Eczema is a chronic skin inflammation that can present itself in a few different ways. For example, eczema on face and eczema on hands can have very different symptoms. But most commonly, it appears red, with raised blisters containing a clear fluid. And it is almost always very itchy.
An in-depth understanding of eczema types, eczema causes, and symptoms is given below.
Broadly speaking, there are different eczema types. Each type is discussed below.

Atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis is a very common type of eczema. People with atopic eczema usually have a family history of the disease, asthma, and/or hay fever. Atopic eczema can start at any age but usually during childhood.
Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin comes into contact with irritants or allergens. This can result in redness, inflammation, itchiness, and pain.
Also known as discoid eczema, this type causes coin-shaped red marks on the skin.
Commonly known as dandruff, it affects the scalp in infants and children. In adults, they can appear in the area around the nose, ears, eyebrows, and groin.
This eczema type occurs in areas most prone to itching, like the back of the neck, scalp, genitals, ears, etc.

Sometimes the veins in the lower legs cannot return blood to the heart. This condition can give rise to stasis eczema that results in swelling.
The main causes of eczema boil down to important factors.
With food sensitivities, the body develops immunity to certain foods. Food allergies can cause immediate and severe reactions. But food sensitivities are fairly mild and can take up to 72 hours to present. If a person's flare-ups are triggered after eating certain foods, it might be possible that they are sensitive to those. While food sensitivities are not as severe as food allergies, they can still lead to inflammation and trigger eczema.
Intestinal permeability, more commonly known as "leaky gut," occurs when the junctions in the small intestine open up. This allows toxins, food particles, bacteria, and viruses to escape into the bloodstream. The immune system rejects them as foreign bodies leading to a spike in inflammation, which can cause an eczema flare-up.
Candida and SIBO are two common gut infections that can cause eczema. Candida is a major cause of eczema because the yeast can colonize the skin through a permeable gut.

Vitamin D supplements are often prescribed for eczema treatment as their deficiency has been linked to eczema causes. Lower Vitamin A levels, which aid in repairing skin cells, can cause eczema symptoms.
Exposure to chemicals and other everyday items can also cause eczema. Some of the most common triggers include:
Mold
Soaps and detergents
Household cleaners

Chemicals found in lotions and shampoos
Scented candles and perfumes
The symptoms of eczema can differ from children to adults.
Eczema may look different depending on the age of the sufferer. Babies six months and younger will have atopic eczema that looks red and a little wet or oozy. For children with dark skin, eczema may cause changes in skin pigmentation or color that look purple or gray.
Additionally, the skin may be very itchy. In babies 6 to 12 months old, eczema typically forms on areas of the body that babies use for crawling. It can look red and inflamed. If infected, it may have a yellow crust on it.

Children over five may develop eczema, which appears as a red and itchy rash or goosebumps. The bumps may also look thicker; on dark skin, eczema may be hyperpigmented.
In adults, the symptoms of eczema may include:
Itchy and dry skin
Discolored and/or inflamed skin
Swelling
