Books are a man's best friend. Haven't we all heard that? Well, but are books a toddler's best friend too? First and foremost books play a pivotal role in your child's development. Books are also a great way to engage your child while also teaching values and morals through books. In this article, we will discuss why books are important for your toddler's development and how to introduce books to your toddler.

Why are Books Important for Your Child's Development?

Books play a great role in children's development. Here are 5 reasons why you should introduce books to your toddler and help them ace their developmental milestones:

1. Expand your child's vocabulary

Reading books to your toddler opens their mind to a whole new world of words. Books help familiarise them with a wide range of words that they may not hear or use every day. When you read books to your child every day and explain the meaning of new words, it helps to increase their vocabulary skills and helps them use the new words in their everyday conversations

2. Widen your child's horizon

Reading books to your child can help enhance their imagination and brain power. Listening about new experiences and incidents on a variety of subjects will help increase your child's imaginative skills. Children who had books read to them early in their life are likely to succeed in academics as they grow up.

3. Enhance your child's focus

Reading books to your toddler will also help enhance their concentration and listening skills. When you read to your child daily, they listen carefully to you and try to understand what the book is about. It helps to develop a higher sense of focus and good listening skills, among other things.

4. Helps with emotional development

Children's books are a treasure trove of experiences, emotions and learnings. When you read to your child, they tend to relate with the characters in the books and learn from their experiences. Children who suffer from anxiety, low confidence or any trauma can help feel better when they are read books about similar topics or characters.

5. Strengthen parent-child bonding

When you form a habit of reading books to your child, it helps to create a bonding moment for both of you. Your child will remember and cherish these moments even as they grow up and will try to recreate this with their own children. Besides building memories, reading books to your child will help them attach to you and form a strong bond.

How to Introduce Books to Your Child?

So, how exactly do you make books your baby's best friend too? Let's find out!

1. Make reading books a ritual

Any new habit that you want to inculcate in your child has to be regular. Hence, make reading a regular practice with your baby. Bedtime stories are an ancient tradition. However, you can even narrate stories to your little one during mealtime or even walking back home from anywhere, in the bus or the car, etc. Build new rituals and be regular!

2. Don't rush

Your toddler cannot sit for longer at one single stretch, no matter how engaging the story is. Do not force your child and move at their pace. Give your toddler the freedom to meddle through the book. Your baby at this age will definitely be attracted to pictures and hence, let your baby linger here and there as and how they want.

3. Narrate/Sing from the pictures

Sometimes, narrating a story reading through the exact words can be tedious. Look at the pictures and try telling or singing the story in your own words.

4. Make the story come to life

Sometimes, you have to put in the extra effort with all the sound effects you can possibly give to make a story interesting for your toddler!

5. Try giving it a personal touch

If any part of the story resonates with a personal story, you know, take your child there into that story. Your baby will probably be more interested in personal and real stories!

6. Ask questions about the story

To ensure that your child does not get bored, keep having a conversation with your child and also ask questions related to the story in between the narration. This will ensure that your baby pays attention to the story and doesn't doze off in between.

7. Choose the right books

A toddler will enjoy only those books that are attractive and interesting. Pop-up books, board books, and touch-and-feel books could be beautiful choices for your baby.

8. Do what interests your child

With each passing day, you learn a little more about your child. Choose books that your baby shows interest in, whether the books are cartoons or princess stories, or even superhero stories!

Children of all ages will learn to develop better focus, increased imagination and more awareness of the world around them when they dive into the wide world of books.
