Cleaning your baby's tongue may seem unneeded if they aren't eating solids or don't have teeth yet. But babies, too, need to have their mouths cleaned, and the earlier you begin, the better. Oral hygiene is not just for older children and adults.

This blog addresses all your doubts related to how to clean baby tongue and provides advice on teaching older children to clean their mouths.

Why is it beneficial to start early?

The same bacteria in your mouth are also in a baby's mouth. Babies' mouths struggle to wipe away milk residue because they produce less saliva than you do. Additionally, it may accumulate on their tongue, leaving a white coating. Cleaning their tongue helps to break up and get rid of the buildup.

But how to clean baby tongue? Cleaning your baby's tongue with a moist cloth helps them become accustomed to oral hygiene early so that when you use a toothbrush to clean their mouth later, it won't be a great surprise.

How to clean a newborn's mouth and tongue?

The following are the fairly straightforward steps on how to clean newborn tongue:

  1. Firstly, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Lay your infant on your lap with their head in your hand.
  3. Dip a finger coated in gauze or cloth into the heated water.
  4. Open your baby's mouth gradually, then use the towel or gauze to gently stroke their tongue in a circular manner.
  5. Gently massage your baby's gums and the inside of their cheeks with your finger.

How to clean infant's tongue is the most worrying thing. You might also use a delicate finger brush made specifically to remove milk residue from your baby's tongue and gums with gentle massaging motions. Your baby's tongue should ideally be brushed at least twice each day.

It's important to clean the tongue if your child has thrush.

Before we move forward on how to clean baby tongue thrush, it's crucial to remember that milk isn't the only cause of a white coating on your baby's tongue. It can occasionally be brought on by a condition called thrush. Thrush resembles milk residue in appearance. The distinction is that milk residue can now be removed with a wipe. But the thrush won't go away with a wipe.

A fungal infection called oral thrush appears in the mouth. The tongue, gums, inside of the cheeks, and roof of the mouth all develop white spots as a result of oral candidiasis.

Now to talk about how to clean baby tongue thrush, antifungal medicine must be used to stop the infection from spreading. Contact your baby's paediatrician if the white coating doesn't go after a few wipes.

How to clean a baby's tongue after six months of age?

To clean a baby's tongue, use toothpaste and a soft, kid-friendly toothbrush after your baby is at least six months old and has their first tooth.

Alternatively, until your child is a little older, you can use a finger brush, gauze, or washcloth. The tongue and gums of your child can also be gently scrubbed with the toothbrush.

You need to administer a tiny bit of toothpaste—roughly the size of a rice grain—to a baby at least six months old. You can raise the portion to pea size once your child reaches the age of three.

How to teach your toddler how to brush and clean their tongue?

Through the following steps, you can demonstrate how to clean baby tongue:

  1. Start by dabbing some toothpaste onto a moist toothbrush.
  2. By brushing your teeth first, you may demonstrate (with your toothbrush).
  3. Next, use their toothbrush to brush the child's teeth. Explain what you're doing while you brush.
  4. Allow the child to try it, guiding their hand as they brush. You may watch your youngster clean their teeth after they get the hang of it.

When should you visit the dentist?

Regular checkups with a paediatric dentist are particularly crucial for babies and toddlers, in addition to brushing and cleaning their tongues.

As a general guideline, make your child's first dental appointment no later than six months after the eruption of their first tooth, or at age one, whichever comes first. The dentist will examine their teeth, jaw, and gums. Additionally, tooth decay and issues with oral motor development will be examined, and upon finding any oral issues, your doctor will suggest home remedies to clean baby tongue.

Bottomline

Good oral care begins at a young age. Although the child won't recall having their tongue and gums wiped when they were a baby, this routine improves their general dental health and encourages them to keep positive habits as they age.
